3 Checks to Perform on Your AC System

When the summer hits in Richardson, Texas, you’ll rely on your air conditioning system to keep your home cool and comfortable. Before that happens, it’s smart to perform a few quick checks to ensure all the components are in good condition and able to handle the increased pressure of the heat and humidity. These checks on your AC system could improve its efficiency and keep your air flowing:

Unblock the Supply Vents

The vents in your home are the grates that allow heated and cooled air to move through them. When you block these vents, the balance in your cooling will be off. As a result, the pressure could build up in the ductwork, leading to potential damage or reduced efficiency. A blockage could even cause more concerning issues, such as trapped exhaust fumes that contain harmful carbon dioxide.

Make sure your vents are clear and open so air can flow properly. If you’re not using a certain room and don’t want to cool it during the summer, look into HVAC zoning rather than trying to create zones yourself. As a result, you’ll save energy and money.

Remove Ice From the AC Unit

If ice is forming on your AC system, this issue indicates a problem with the system. Ice usually means the system doesn’t have enough airflow over the evaporator coils and might indicate a clogged or dirty air filter. Try swapping out the filter to see if that resolves the issue. If not, your system may be low on refrigerant, which you’ll want to have checked before the heat of the summer truly sets in.

Trim Landscaping Around Outdoor Unit

Your air conditioner’s outdoor unit should also have plenty of space around it to allow for sufficient airflow. Trim any trees or shrubs that may be encroaching on the housing. You can also use a brush to remove any yard debris, such as leaves or grass clippings.
